We are delighted to publish the first two episodes of Beyond BASIC – a new Integrity Matters podcast mini-series sharing learning and innovation from Integrity’s endline evaluation of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) £23.5m Better Assistance in Crises (BASIC) Programme, which ran from 2018-2026.

All episodes in the four-part series are less than 15 minutes long. They include voices from Integrity’s evaluation team, FCDO, and delivery partner DAI, bringing a range of perspectives on the programme and its evaluation. This is a great opportunity for busy evaluators to dive into the methods, insights generated and important relationships behind the scenes of evaluating a complex global research and technical assistance programme.

Our Beyond BASIC podcasts

Episode 1: Methodological Innovation in the Evaluation, dives into how the evaluation was designed and delivered, and how innovation helped ensure rigour, transparency, and practical learning in volatile contexts. Host Niki Wood, Integrity Head of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) is joined by two guests: Integrity MEL expert, Edward Small and Georgia Plank from o-x.ai, who both were part of the evaluating team.

This is the first of two episodes that go behind the scenes of the insights generated by evaluating a complex global research and technical assistance programme. Three guests join Niki: Nick Maunder who led the evaluation; Heather Kindness from FCDO who leads work on social protection; and Consulting and Research Team Leader Cathy Shaw from DAI, one of the organisations involved in implementing BASIC.

Episode 3: The future of  Social Protection Programming focuses on effectiveness, impact, efficiency and sustainability, and what this means for future programmes supporting social protection in crisis settings. Three guests join Niki: Nick Maunder who led the evaluation; Jen Gordon, Policy and Programmes Advisor in the Social Protection team at the FCDO; and Consulting and Research Team Leader Cathy Shaw from DAI, one of the organisations involved in implementing BASIC.
