Private Health Sector Assessment in Somaliland, Puntland and South-Central Somalia

Date/Duration

2014

Project Objectives

Evaluate elements of the private health sector in Somalia to enable local health authorities to develop an engagement strategy with the private sector to enhance public sector health service delivery.

Project Outputs

As part of a FCDO initiative to support the health sector in Somalia, Integrity supported the FCDO funded partnership resource centre High-Quality Technical Assistance for Results (HEART) to conduct an exploratory assessment of private sector health service delivery in Somaliland, Puntland and South-central Somalia. This involved primary data collection through qualitative mechanisms including key informant interviews, focus group discussions and a workshop. Engagement with key stakeholders included private sector health service implementors, various NGOs, bi-lateral and multi-lateral agencies delivering on the ground, and FCDO. The study determined the role and dynamics of the private sector in health service delivery which guided FCDO in developing recommendations for private sector engagement, with the overall aim of enhancing the public sector’s involvement in health service delivery.
