Emergency Assistance

The quality of evidence generated in humanitarian situations often falls short of what is required to deliver effective and accountable emergency assistance. This reduces the benefit to affected communities and may even do harm. Integrity supports better decision making through research, insights and supporting evidence-based decision-making.

Thematic

Thematic:

The primary objectives of emergency assistance are to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity. It is provided typically in response to crises, including natural disasters and man-made disaster. A significant amount is thus directed at communities affected by violence and conflict.

Challenge

Challenge:

Despite the sensitivity of the context, the quality of evidence generated and used in humanitarian situations often falls short of what is required to deliver effective and accountable interventions. This reduces the benefit to affected communities and may even do harm.

What We Do

What We Do:

Knowing what works can make the difference. Integrity operates in a range of humanitarian situations, including rapid onset disasters and protracted urban crises. We support better decision making in these contexts through robust mixed-method research; emphasising the insights of affected communities; improved access to evidence; and supporting decision-makers to use emerging lessons.

Ad hoc case interviews and one-off surveys are unlikely to result in evidence that decision-makers can trust. Integrity combines a range of methods and tools to collect data during humanitarian interventions. This is essential for working effectively across different types of crises and interventions, particularly where access is limited.

Evidence must be used to improve outcomes for affected communities and the communities should be central to the generation of the evidence. We involve communities, including women, girls and minorities, in setting research agendas, and ensure their views are prominent within our analysis.

The value of better evidence is diminished if decision-makers cannot access what they need, when they need it. Integrity develops cost-effective and sustainable knowledge management solutions for our clients. These support evidence-based decision making within complex and fast-moving operating environments.

Our knowledge management solutions are complemented by learning services that are tailored to the distinctive organisational and operational contexts of humanitarian situations. We support leaders to use lessons and drive behaviour change within their organisations so that quality evidence does lead to better decisions and better outcomes.
