Meet our Head of Office, Pakistan – Rashid Nazir

Rashid Nazir joined Integrity as the new Head of Office Pakistan in July 2020,  based in our Islamabad Office. We caught up with Rashid to find out more about his background and experience, role at Integrity and our Pakistan portfolio of work.

Please introduce yourself, could you tell us a bit more about your background?

I am a Pakistani national and International Development professional with 20 years of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) experience. Throughout my career, I have worked with a variety of non-profit, for-profit, and multilateral organisations.

I started my career working with Sudhaar, an NGO based in Lahore, Pakistan. During my time at Sudhaar, I worked on a child labour project called Addressing Child Labour Through Quality Education for All (ACL-QEFA) funded by the US Department of Labour. The key objective of the project was the reduction of child Labour in Pakistan. It was a remarkable experience to witness how the project interventions changed the lives of thousands of marginalised and vulnerable out of school children – involved in bonded and unbonded labour – by enrolling them into formal and informal education systems and providing them with opportunities to develop vocational skills such as training to become a mechanic or electrician. This experience furthered my desire to use my career to make a change in the lives of marginalised and vulnerable populations.

In 2007, I joined UNICEF Pakistan where I supported the work they were doing in response to the 2005 Kashmir earthquake that killed more than 80,000 people, seriously injured an equivalent number and made hundreds of thousands more homeless. I continued to work on humanitarian programming when I joined the International Rescue Committee in the August of 2008. In 2010, I joined the UN mission in Timor-Leste with UNICEF and worked closely with the Ministry of Education to improve the National Education Management System in the country. When I returned to Pakistan, I joined Jhpiego to work on maternal and child health programming. Most recently, before joining Integrity, I worked on one of the largest USAID funded MEL contracts in Pakistan for Management Systems International.

What are your priorities as Head of Office Pakistan, and could you tell us a bit more about the work Integrity delivers there?

As Head of Office Pakistan, I coordinate Integrity’s work on all our Pakistan projects; build relationships with new and existing clients, oversee partner and consultant relationships; build a pipeline of business opportunities in the country; and maintain a safe and legally compliant country operating platform.

Integrity has been active in Pakistan since 2012 and has built up a wide portfolio of projects. We work closely with the Government of Pakistan, the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), and the UK’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund and government ministries to deliver projects across Pakistan. Some examples of our current projects in Pakistan include the Third Party Validation, Monitoring and Research Peer Review of Delivering Accelerated Family Planning (DAFPAK), Third-Party Monitoring (TPM) of the Building Disaster Resilience in Pakistan Programme, and evaluating the FCDO’s approach to Value for Money in Pakistan for the Independent Commission for Aid Impact

What attracted you to join Integrity, and how have you found being onboarded into your role remotely during COVID-19?

Before joining, I met several people who spoke highly of working with Integrity, in particular highlighting its working culture, values, and dynamic team. I was excited to join the team, as the nature of Integrity’s work in Pakistan closely overlaps with my experience and skillset.

I joined Integrity in an uncertain and unprecedented time due to COVID-19. The Government of Pakistan imposed a strict lockdown across all the regions of Pakistan including Islamabad where the Integrity country office is situated. Consequently, I joined Integrity remotely – an experience which was certainly a first! What I really appreciated about my colleagues during this time was that everyone ensured that my transition into the new role went as smoothly as possible. This further reaffirmed my initial positive impression of the company. I am glad to say that my experience working with Integrity thus far has been nothing short of excellent.
